United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Ahead of White House Visit

Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his Washington trip the coming week.

He was appointed transitional president subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization HTS, previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for backing of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The pair met initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the Middle East.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner in Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent his initial visit to the US in the current year. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the United Nations gathering in New York for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
