No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a security raid targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.
Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Community members have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
