My Hero Academia Cast Members Reflect on an Emotional Last Chapter: 'I am Something of a Emotional Wreck'

The long-running anime series My Hero Academia has finally concluded, leaving fans with a deep feeling of emotion that extends beyond the story itself. This heroic tale has always been more than a simple story; it's a coming-of-age journey about hope, resilience, and the real definition of heroism in a world full of trials. The eighth season pushes these core themes to their absolute limit, as Class 1-A faces the fallout of the Paranormal Liberation Front and a world teetering on the brink of total chaos.

For a whole audience, the series, which debuted in 2015, served as their introduction to anime. From its hype-filled start to its poignant finale, it defined the genre for nearly a decade. Its end truly marks the close of an era. If you discover you are shedding a tear during the final episodes, know that you are in plenty of company. The voice actors felt those very same feelings, channeling raw sentiment into their recordings for the last chapters.

Saying Farewell to a Pivotal Role

"It’s been such a magical thing to see this last installment bring together all these story threads into this massive, heartfelt release for these heroes," stated one actor. "And to be involved in that, during that time, voicing the characters, is truly moving."

The difficulty of the goodbye isn't solely due to the storyline. My Hero Academia became a major part in the lives of its performers, and with its conclusion comes the closing of an period they have been part of for a long time.

"Just as a human being, for whom this has been a daily reality for the better part of a decade, even if the line I'm saying is not overly sentimental, if it’s just Ida being typical, every time I finish a session, I’m kind of a weepy mess because it's ending. I am unprepared," admitted another veteran voice actor.

Unexpected Tears from the Last Season

Despite voicing their own iconic roles, several actors still have personal favorite characters outside their own, heroes whose personal journeys hit them just as hard on an personal level.

"What that’s surprised me so far in my viewing of the last episodes is how numerous characters are bringing me to tears," said one actor. "Whether that be the Symbol of Peace's battle at the very start of this season, Aizawa, [even] Aoyama drew a tear this season!"

The performers behind the sibling dynamic of Shoto and Dabi were also swept up in the tragedy of their complex relationship, particularly during the siblings' clashes across the final chapters.

A Powerful Moment

"Recently, a castmate said something as his character that, really, if you took it out of context, it’s a simple line, it shouldn’t do anything, but he asks his brother a question, and the way it was delivered was so real and poignant," remembered one actor. "It inspired the read I gave. I adore my colleagues, they’re so good at this, and I cannot stress enough that I’m so fortunate."

Another actor echoed the sentiment, clarifying that the seemingly simple line originates from a brief, lighthearted moment introduced earlier, one that comes full circle in the finale and lands with devastating emotional weight.

"Fast-forward to the final season, when they’re meeting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor explained. "Yes, it was just a way to try to connect. It was just a question, but within the story, it's all-encompassing. It's love, acceptance, remorse..."

"... and penitence," finished the other, voice thick with emotion. "Those boys ought to have had the chance to speak like that."
