Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
Summers, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the AI firm stated it respected Summers' choice to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the company remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its records on the case.
The measure will then head to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has indicated he expects to endorse the measure, after reversing his stance on the issue following objections from his followers.
Message Details
A group of financier-linked emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications revealed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to connect Summers to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the wider community, he said he assumed "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not connected with the organization.
The former official entered the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
