Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
